ATTENTION: We are not booking trips for 2024 and beyond. Unfortunately, the ranch has decided to end the fishing program at Grindstone Lakes. There are currently no plans to reinstate the program. Thank you all VERY much for your support over the years.

Grindstone Lakes, Oregon

Official Website

Less than 100 miles east of Bend, Oregon lies one of the state’s best stillwater rainbow trout fisheries.  Neal Burrell Fly Fishing is the only outfitter providing access to this remarkable fishery. Grindstone Lakes is a series of five private lakes that range in size from 20-80 acres.  Managed to produce fast growing, healthy trout, anglers can expect to hook fish in the 2-10 pound range in any of the five lakes. Due to their private ownership, Grindstone’s trout see very limited fishing pressure, which often results in phenomenal fishing.  These lakes are well established, spring fed, and contain an incredible assortment of invertebrate life.  Chironomids (midges), leeches, scuds, callibaetis mayflies, dragonflies, damselflies, caddis flies, flying ants, and grasshoppers represent some of the most important hatches.  Dry flies, stripping streamers, dry-dropper rigs, and indicators…it all works!  Bring the arsenal!

Our season at Grindstone begins in mid to late April and continues through early July.  Bookings tend to be the heaviest in May and June, which coincides with some of the best hatches of the season.

Our guests stay in a semi-permanent tent camp. Camp is an easy walk from our largest lake, putting after-dinner (or pre-breakfast!) dry fly sessions within easy striking distance. Our premium tents are made by Montana Canvas and Kodiak Canvas and are equipped with cots, air mattresses, and heaters to ensure comfort. Additionally, we have hot showers and flush toilets, plus a wood burning stove in our dining hall tent.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own floatation device. Float tubes, pontoon boats, prams, drift boats are all appropriate. If you do not have a suitable watercraft, we can provide a pontoon boat to you at no additional charge. 1-2 guides will be on the water at all times during the fishing day to assist your group. We also offer a fully guided option for guests. Up to two anglers may share a drift boat with one of our guides for the duration of their trip. This option carries an additional cost of $1200 for 3 days and $1600 for 4 days. The fee may be split between two anglers. Advanced booking is required.
